Deliberate Use of NOTA Is Hazardous to Democracy

Indian democracy is the largest one in the world and it, therefore, has several dimensions and characteristics to it. In India, all democratic protocols are executed with the utmost care and concern for the citizens. The election system has also been improved with the implementation of the EVM system that assures fastest results, reliability and minute details related to any constituency. One of the major revisions in the election system was the inclusion of the “NOTA” option i.e. ‘none of the above’ in the process of voting. Recently, the BJP Chief of Maharashtra and the candidate of Kothrud Assembly constituency Honourable Mr Chandrakant Dada Patil emphasized on one of the risks associated with the NOTA option, requesting the voters to vote for the candidate of their choice instead.

Mr Patil said that the use of NOTA is harmful to the democracy; its deliberate use by voters is not preferred. He has placed a collective appeal before the voters to vote genuinely for the right candidate in this election. Mr Patil said this in a candid interview with the news channel Zee 24 Tas. During this interview, he expressed his views on the significance of votes and the voters.
Mr Chandrakant Dada Patil explained that purposeful use of NOTA by voters is not recommended in a democracy. It can be destructive for the system of the country. He also added that there can be different perceptions of voters about the candidates contesting and that there is absolutely nothing wrong with that. If voters think that they cannot choose any of the given candidates as their leader, it is rather preferable to stamp against the name of the deserving one in the list who is better than others. Mr Patil also underlined the significance of votes and voters. According to Mr Dada Patil, citizens must exercise their right of voting. Skipping voting is not acceptable from any mature and patriotic citizen.
Meanwhile, Honourable Mr Chandrakant Dada Patil is contesting for the upcoming Assembly election through the Kothrud-Pune constituency. Earlier, he was opposed by the locals of Kothrud as the election candidate from their constituency. However, strong public relations, matchless experience and the down-to-earth approach of Mr Chandrakant Dada Patil have turned the negative situation into a positive one. In this situation, the opinion of Mr Patil on the use of NOTA option is more contextual. His appeal to the voters to vote for a genuine candidate is highly significant.
Through this interview, Mr Chandrakant Patil has also thrown light on the potential risk of deliberate use of NOTA in a particular constituency. He says that an attempt like this could be dangerous for the democratic system. Mr Patil’s maturity and rich experience are simply outstanding, as compared to any other political leader in the state. His appeal to voters to choose at least one candidate and never skip the voting process is just commendable. Citizens of Kothrud are fortunate that they have received an opportunity to be led by such a seasoned, down-to-earth, action-oriented and mature leader.
