Ganesha Festival Special—2nd September 2019


India, the land of festivals, celebrates Ganesh Chaturthi in Bhadrapada in the Shukla paksha Chathurthi (4th day of waxing moon period) which generally falls on September. This holy festival is celebrated in the north of India, especially in the state of Maharashtra with great zeal and enthusiasm. Ganesha is the son of Lord Shiva and his better half, Goddess Parvati and he is the deity that deserves the honour of “Aadya-Puja” during any holistic ritual.

Ganesha is the most loved deity in all age-groups and it is considered as the deity of 14 Vidyas (education), 64 Kalas (Arts) and money. Ganesha blesses their devotees with knowledge and wealth. It is the most favourite deity of children. Ganesha Festival is celebrated for 10 days from Ganesha Chaturthi to Anant Chaturdashi. In Maharashtra, great freedom fighter, Late Lokamanya Tilak started the custom of Ganesh Festival Celebration with public participation to drive unity and positive thought process in the community. The same trend continues till now and Ganesh Festival has become a great platform for social initiatives, togetherness, and enjoyment. 
The story behind Ganesh Chaturthi
This Vinayaka Chaturthi is celebrated as the birthday of Gan-Nayak or Ganesha. Mythology also states that no one should see the moon on this day. 
Celebrations
The typical celebrations of Ganesha festival include bringing the idol of Lord Ganesha to home and performing idol installation with full devotion and puja vidhi. Many devotees keep fast on this day.  It is believed that when Lord Ganesha comes home, he brings along a lot of wisdom, joy, and prosperity to the home. This festival is loaded with positivism, enthusiasm, and zeal. Lord Ganesh removes negative thoughts and obstacles in lives. 
Different communities, colonies, societies and social groups also celebrate Ganesh festival. This celebration includes pandal preparation, decorative ideas. Aarti, Prasad, and Puja are performed with devotion. Different competitions and social initiatives are also undertaken by these groups. During this holy occasion, Ganesha is offered with his favourite food items like Modak. 
In Maharashtra, Ganesh festival is also accompanied by Mahalaxmi(Gauri) Puja. One or Two statues of Mahagauri are installed with devotion and its puja is performed. MahaGauri is lso termed as Jyeshtha and her friend Kanishtha are welcomed at homes. They are also offered with special Prasad such as Puran-Poli and other sweets.

Both these places are well-known for their unique tradition of Ganesha festival celebrations. This year, Honourable Dada Patil has requested people to enjoy this occasion with peace, unity, and happiness. He has also requested people to focus on the pollution-free celebrations and has asked masses to follow corporation guidelines for the rituals and try to conserve nature along with the festival celebrations. Let this festival be a great beginning for these environment-friendly resolutions.
