Kojagiri Poornima Special—13th October 2019

India is known as the land of culture, customs, and traditions. The country celebrates Kojagiri Poornima or Sharad Poornima with great zeal and devotion, just like every other festival. Sharad Ritu or the early autumn season is recognised with pleasant climatic conditions, clear skies and a vibrantly shining moon. Kojagiri Poornima also marks the end of the monsoon season. Kojagiri Poonam or Ashwin Poornima is celebrated on the full moon day of the Hindu month- Ashwin that usually falls in October. This year Kojagiri Poornima is being celebrated on Sunday, 13th October.

Kojagiri Poornima has special significance in reference with Goddess Laxmi, God Kuber and the Moon. It is also known as the Kaumudi, meaning moonlit. On Kojagiri Purnima, the moon is seen with all the sixteen Kalas, which happen to be its various phases. This occasion marks two significant aspects in the farmers' lives - a good harvest that will result in prosperity and blessings from the superlative authority that controls all human actions and ventures.

Celebrations of Kojagiri Poornima

In Maharashtra, Kojagiri Poornima is celebrated with great zeal and devotion. People observe fast during the day for seeking the blessings of Goddess Laxmi. Laxmi and Kuber Puja is performed at home. During the night, people consume flavoured Milk that is kept in the moonlight for some time. This custom also has strong scientific backing. The Moon rays which fall on the Rice Kheer or flavoured milk are said to enrich it with their healing properties and improve our immunity in order to welcome the upcoming winter season. People also prefer Jagran, Dandiya and cultural programmes on this night. This day is an excellent option for a family get-together, union with friends, etc.

On behalf of the Honourable BJP Chief, Maharashtra Mr Chandrakant Patil, we would like to wish you all a very Happy Kojagiri Poornima. May Goddess Laxmi bless you with wealth, prosperity, and good health.

Kojagiri Poornima also has a great significance with reference to the Great King Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj and the Hirkani story. Hirkani, a brave woman who is respected by all for her matchless motherhood in the history of Maratha kingdom. The Government also have honoured Hirkani by naming the different schemes and baby-care rooms in Government and public places after her.

Revenue Minister of Maharashtra Mr Chandrakant Dada Patil also looks at this festival as a great occasion for the family get-together that will strengthen bonding and love among family members. Mr Patil has requested all to celebrate this Kojagiri Poornima peacefully and in an eco-friendly manner. He also has emphasised on following our customs instead of copying western culture blindly on this holy occasion.

We again wish you all A Very Happy Kojagiri Poornima on behalf of Mr Chandrakant Dada Patil’s team. Be happy, be healthy!!
